Are you considering getting your first iPad, or upgrading from your existing model? You may be surprised to discover that the iPad is less of a lone wolf, and more like a family of four main models. Before you scroll, read our buying guide to help you choose the best iPad for you. There’s plenty of earlier models for sale online, too, so keep in mind that the specific specs will change from generation to generation.
Apple iPad – the original pick
The standard iPad has remained a strong contender on the tablet market across eight generations. The 2020 model flaunts a 10.2 inch display screen and an A12 bionic chip (first appearing on the Apple scene in the 2018 Apple iPhone XS), sprinting laps around the A10 processor in the iPad models before it. If you’re a gamer or an impatient multi-tasker, this iPad is equipped to keep up. It also supports Apple tablet accessories including the Apple Pencil (first generation) and the Smart Keyboard for added precision and flexibility.
Apple iPad Pro – the cream of the crop
If you’re eager to hold the latest tech in your hands, the Apple iPad Pro is sure to appeal. For one thing, it’s bigger than the standard model – if you opt for the Pro, you can choose between an 11- or 12.9-inch screen. It’s also ideal for page-flipping or sketching finer details using the Apple Pencil (second generation) that magnetically attaches to the iPad’s edge for automatic charging (purchased separately).
The Apple Pro is faster too, using a A14 Bionic chip (like the iPhone12) and ProMotion technology for rapid screen refreshing and smoother scrolling. It also features extra speakers and microphones, boosting sound quality and voice clarity, plus an added ultra-wide lens for capturing panoramic scenes. There’s additional storage, a USB-C port that plugs into your MacBook charger and Face ID, plus it’s Magic-Keyboard-compatible. The iPad Pro is undoubtedly the ultimate iPad around, but it may or may not be your ultimate iPad – that depends on your desire or need for the premium spec and features.
Apple iPad Air – the best of both worlds?
The Apple iPad Air joined the line up later, entering its 4th generation in 2020. It’s equivalent to the iPad Pro model in speed and performance, offering many of the same features. Unless you’re after the specific selling points of the iPad Pro, the iPad Air is a step up from the standard iPad that’s likely to fit the bill. It’s missing the home button, a possible sticking point if you like the press-button functionality (although Touch ID is built into the power button).
Apple iPad Mini – your travel companion
Sharing the A12 Bionic chip of the iPad, the Apple iPad Mini (5th generation in 2019) is popular for its 7.9-inch screen, just right for little hands to keep the kids occupied, or perfect for portable use on the go. Although it’s compact at less than 350 grams and just 6.1 millimetres thin, this pocket-sized tablet packs a punch and it’s just as capable as the standard model.
