Pro shopper reveals how to hack Black Friday sales

Black Friday unofficially marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and is increasingly becoming more popular in Australia.

As we prepare for the shopping frenzy that is the end of the year, Australia’s Queen of Smart and Savvy Shopping, Kathy Sheeran, shares her top tips for making the most of the sale.

1. Get listing

Like grocery shopping, the best way to avoid buyer’s remorse in sales is to go in with a list of things you actually want to buy. You’re less likely to be distracted by deals if you keep your eyes on the prize.

Likewise, you can make a list of things you no longer need or want to sell on Gumtree to help you offset the cost of your Black Friday spending spree.

2. Set a budget

All those discounts add up and before you know it you might have saved hundreds of dollars but spent thousands more than you should have. Set an amount you want to spend, shop around for the best deals and when you’ve reached your limit, stop. Once you know your budget you can prepare ahead of time, by selling items on Gumtree prior to fund your spending.

3. Think globally

If you’re buying online from a retailer somewhere other than Australia, remember to factor in time-zones and shipping times and remember that electronic plugs and voltage might be different. I’ve found through experience that it’s worth checking whether the products are compatible with Australian outlets, and if shipping is going to cost you the price of your discount.

4. Clear your space

Most of us buy more than we need and our spaces are full of clothes, books and products that other people would enjoy. Get rid of things you no longer use by listing them on Gumtree before you dive into the sales. As a bonus, you’ll get some extra moolah to spend on the sales!

5. Make your money count

While you’re making decisions about purchasing, you might also want to think about what you’re supporting. One small way to be a more conscious consumer is to make sure you’re spending money on the brands that support your vision of the world and your set of values.

The end of the calendar year is a fun and festive time – by following a plan, you can get more bang for your buck, literally.
