How To Clean & Maintain Your Washing Machine

A cleaner washing machine means cleaner clothes, and it can also help you avoid costly washing machine repairs. The best way to clean your machine depends on the type of washer you own, so we’ve included a list of steps for both front and top loaders.

Front loading washing machines

To clean your front loader, check these key components:

The drain filter—take it out for a wash, but have some old towels ready in case there’s still water in the machine.

The detergent drawer—take it out, wash it in warm water, dry it off and it’s good to go.

The door seals—these can get mouldy, so give them a rub down with bleach or an anti-mould product, then thoroughly wash this off so it doesn’t erode the rubber.

After completing these steps add half a cup of bicarbonate of soda to the detergent draw and fill the fabric softener draw with white vinegar. Then run your machine empty on a long hot cycle, then run it again on a cold cycle.

If you’ve gone through these steps and you’re thinking your old machine might be beyond redemption, then it could be time to treat yourself to an upgrade. Great brands to consider are Miele, Bosch and Siemens.

Top loading washing machines

Usually less expensive than front loaders, top loaders are great for smaller households and deliver efficient performance with the right water setting. Plus, you can easily stop them mid-cycle to add any last-minute additions.

To keep your top loader in top nick, check these components:

Lint filter—take the filter out and give it a rub in warm, soapy water.

Fabric softener dispenser—remove this and give it a warm, soapy wash as well.

Drainage pipes—loosen the hose clamp where the washing machine hose is attached to the machine, then hold one hose end under a sink tap and the other at the sink’s drain and run warm water through it to dislodge any blockages or build-up.

Put all the components back in place, then run your empty machine on a hot-wash setting, adding half a cup of baking soda and the same amount of white vinegar. After a few minutes, hit pause and leave your machine for about an hour—then let it complete its full cycle and give the drum a rub down. Finally, run it empty on a cold-wash setting to rinse it out and leave it sparkling clean.

If you’ve followed these steps and your machine is still looking a bit shabby, then it may be time to treat yourself to an upgrade. Proven top loader brands include Fisher & Paykel, Speed Queen and Whirlpool.

And don’t forget to give your washing machine stand some love as well—a clean machine on a clean stand is a very pleasing sight.
