If it’s too good to be true, it probably is – tips for online shoppers from the ACORN

Whether it’s buying, selling or swapping, Australians are getting savvier when it comes to spending their hard-earned money and finding bargains online.

Unfortunately, criminals are getting savvier too. Scams involving buying or selling goods or donating money are topping the types of online scams being reported to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (the ACORN).

The ACORN is a new national online policing initiative where you can easily report cybercrime, and get tips on how to avoid being caught out. Reporting to the ACORN means that law enforcement agencies can better understand the problem and toughen our defences against cybercrime.

It’s important to do your homework when shopping online, and remember that if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Some scammers may claim that there are brokerage fees or import duties that you must pay to receive your item. Others are insistent that they can’t meet in person and need to use an ‘agent’, or will pressure you into transferring money online quickly to seal the deal.

Be wary of these common scam clues – always inspect items in person before buying, and don’t transfer money to anyone you don’t know.
