Most Popular Car in Australia – What Are Our Top 10 Selling Cars?

Toyota HiLux

Toyota’s HiLux continues to dominate the new-car market with sales figures from 2021 confirming the rugged ute’s (and Toyota’s) dominance of the Aussie market as the highest-selling car in the country.

Against a total new-car market of just over a million sales (1,049,831 total sales after the Covid sales-horror that was 2020) Toyota absolutely dominated no less than nine market segments (as defined by VFACTS) while continuing to steamroller the opposition brands.

In fact, 2021 was the sixth year that the HiLux had topped the list of the best-selling cars in Australia (not just in the ute market) while the year continued Toyota’s place at the top of the brands overall, a position it has not given up since claiming it in 2003 (and 1991 to 1994 and 1998 as well).

Throw in the fact that Toyota has been the biggest-selling brand, selling the most popular car in the Aussie commercial vehicle market for the last 43 years, and you see the difference a reputation like Toyota’s makes. Let’s not forget, either, that those commercial vehicle sales are often to the arch-pragmatists out there; farmers, industrial companies and fleet managers. Such buyers don’t care about what’s the most common car among their friends and neighbours, they simply want Australia’s best cars for the job.

As a brand, Toyota sold a total of 223,642 cars and trucks in 2021, more than twice that sold by the second-rated brand, Mazda with 101,119 sales.

Segments in which it dominated include small car, medium car, medium SUV, large SUV, upper-large SUV, light bus, medium bus, vans 2.5 to 3.5 tonne and 4X4 utes.

On a per model basis, 2021 was dominated by the HiLux, but the Ford Ranger (which will be replaced this year by an all-new model) ran it a close second overall. The HiLux-Ranger stoush remains the one to watch, too. The Ford has edged out the HiLux in monthly sales at various points in the last year and, with that all-new model ready to go, the Ranger promises new tech and new styling to push the Toyota even harder. The second half of 2022 will be one to watch.
