Partnering with The New Joneses – an eight star energy rated house

New Joneses

Australia’s second hand economy is worth a whopping $29 billion[1] and is growing every year! Many Australians don’t realise just how much their unwanted items are really worth or how easy it is to recycle their goods by selling them online. That’s why Gumtree is partnering with The New Joneses, a sustainable eight star energy rated house, in February to show Aussies how easy it is to buy second hand as well as how to get your home looking beautiful with second hand items and save a bit of cash in the process.

Second hand doesn’t have to mean tired-looking hand-me-downs, in fact you can find some incredible one-of-a-kind items, antiques, refurbished homewares and things that have hardly been used all on Gumtree. We even managed to find this awesome side table listed by one of our Gumtree users!

If you are looking to live like The New Joneses, here are a few tips for getting second hand savvy:

  1. Always inspect the item in person to ensure it is in the condition that the listing states.
  2. Use your bargaining skills and negotiate a best price.
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you know, the better.
  4. Look for good, strong pieces and consider the ‘bones’ of the item you’re buying. That fabric from the 50’s can always be replaced.
  5. A hint for searching on Gumtree is to narrow the results through your location, that way you’re only looking at items that can easily be inspected in picked-up close-by.

‘The New Joneses’ is an eight star energy rated house completely furnished with second hand items and is sponsored by Gumtree. Check it out at Melbourne’s Federation Square from the 9th to the 13th of February. For more information, check out thenewjoneses.com.
