This is an important week in rock history as it marks the loss of rock’n’roll legend Elvis Presley. A week of celebrations takes place in Memphis (his home town) to honour his memory. If you’re an Elvis fan but can’t quite make it to the USA, it doesn’t mean you should miss out on the fun …
Can’t help falling in love with all things Elvis? We hear you! Here are some fun ideas to celebrate the King of Rock at home.
Good Rocking Tonight
The first thought that comes to mind is of course an Elvis themed party. You’ll have no trouble creating a playlist for the night and what better excuse to dress up in an Elvis costume, wig and glasses? All these props are readily available by the dozen and you can save by finding a costume hire service on Gumtree.
Elvis is famous for many things, but his unique dance style is close to the top of the list. Learn to shake it like Elvis at a local dance class, which you’ll find in the Community category on Gumtree. If you haven’t got rhythm but still like to move, Elvis was actually a black-belt in Karate and also trained in Ju-Jitsu. Flex you ninja skills and take up a martial arts class.
Later in life, Elvis became notorious for his huge appetite and outrageous diet, in particular, fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. We don’t recommend this concoction as an every-day snack, but why not treat yourself just this once? Or better yet, take the whole family out to an American-style diner and enjoy a feast of Elvis proportions.
Viva Las Vegas
The flashy lights of Las Vegas and Elvis’ outrageous costumes go hand in hand so much, so it’s easy to forget Elvis was a southern boy from Tennessee. A southern-style party would be fun, but not as much as a Vegas-themed poker night with your mates. There are companies that hire out all the equipment you need and if you’re not inclined to gamble your hard-earned cash, consider Monopoly money instead.
Let’s not forget that as well as a rock’n’roll icon, Elvis graced the silver screen in more that 30 hit movies like Girls! Girls! Girls!, Love me Tender and Roustabout. If you’re not quite ready to take on the Elvis diet, dress like the king or get down in Vegas, we recommend parking on the couch with an Elvis movie marathon.
