The Best Dishwasher for Your Kitchen

The Best Dishwasher For Your Kitchen

Most modern kitchens have a dishwasher, or space for one at least. If you’re planning to upgrade or replace your dishwasher—or perhaps buy one for the first time—there are options for every budget. If your kitchen lacks the standard space, benchtop and standalone dishwashers are available. Read on to find out how dishwashers are compared and choose the best dishwasher for you.

What makes a good dishwasher?

When dishwashers are reviewed, they are usually rated on factors such as:

  • Performance
  • Reliability
  • Design
  • Internal layout and size
  • Quietness
  • Value for money
  • Energy and water efficiency rating
  • Overall customer satisfaction

You may also want to consider where the dishwasher fits in your kitchen. Fully integrated dishwashers are concealed seamlessly behind kitchen cabinets and often have a continuous kickboard. Semi-integrated dishwashers have a panel fitting below the buttons on the door that matches your cabinetry.

Popular dishwasher brands

Here are some popular brands that can usually be found secondhand on Gumtree, listed in no particular order.

Bosch—affordable quality

Bosch is a German electrical appliance manufacturer, although not all of their dishwashers are made there. They offer high-end models as well as some cheaper options. Equipped with flexible basket systems, some models have lockable trays to securely hold long-stemmed glasses in place. Many Bosch dishwashers boast 5-star water efficiency ratings: Some use only 10 – 12 L per cycle, making Bosch a great choice for the eco-conscious kitchen.

Miele—made in Europe

The Miele dishwasher range has versatile stacking options as well as features such as ‘ComfortClose’, ‘Knock2Open’ and ‘AutoOpen drying’. Like Bosch, they offer a huge range including high-end German-made models and more economical ones made elsewhere in Europe. They also have decent energy and water ratings.

Fisher and Paykel—the dish drawer specialist

Fisher and Paykel is a New Zealand company that still makes some dishwashers locally. Best known for their dish drawers, they also make standard-sized dishwashers. Double dish drawers offer the capacity to split loads for different wash cycles or wash single small loads. Fisher and Paykel dishwasher racks are adjustable for ease of stacking. Starting out as a manufacturer of refrigerators, they now offer the full range of kitchen and laundry appliances.

Smeg—high-end quality

Designed and manufactured in Italy, the Smeg brand may be best known for its retro fridges, but they also make high-end dishwashers (which is reflected in the price, new or used). They offer a massive range of free-standing, under-bench, and semi- and fully integrated dishwashers, coming in compact, wide and extra tall sizes—not to mention the very groovy retro series. Smeg dishwashers use a couple of different washing systems that function differently from the standard single spinning spray arm.

Westinghouse—practical and inexpensive

The Westinghouse dishwasher range is modest, but their selection of standard-sized free-standing models is stylish, practical and inexpensive. Westinghouse is an American home appliance company that prides itself on designing appliances for family living.

Other brands you might like to consider include Kogan (known for economical benchtop models), LG, AEG, Electrolux, Dishlex and Samsung. If you have a compact kitchen, check out Gumtree’s article about small dishwashers. Gumtree has lots of dishwashers to browse, so happy shopping!
