The BMW Small Car Range In 2021

Freude am Fahren. Sheer Driving Pleasure has been the BMW catchcry for over 50 years and it stands the test of time. Since around 2005, BMW small cars have all had 5-Star ANCAP safety ratings. They also offer something for virtually every driver, so let’s take a closer look at some of the BMWs you can buy and sell on Gumtree Australia.

BMW i3

On our roads for over five years, the BMW i3 series has seen recent upgrades. The new 94Ah model looks similar, but it’s different in one key respect: its larger battery means it can travel around 200km, up 70km from the smaller (60Ah) battery.

The 94Ah is 50kg heavier but it has regenerative braking to top up the battery in stop-start traffic. There’s also an i3 Rex (Range Extender) with a (660cc) 2-cylinder motor that can carry you another 120km.

BMW 1 Series

Competing against the Audi A3, the BMW 1 Series has expanded and contracted. It began as a hatchback, coupe and convertible line-up before the two-seaters were phased into the 2 Series. BMW hasn’t sacrificed luxury or quality for a reduction in size. It’s distinctly BMW and this extends to the layout, instrumentation and cabin finishes.

There are 118i, 120i and 125i models plus the sporty, more expensive M140i. The 118i offers a diesel engine and a petrol power plant shared with the Mini Cooper. The 125i is equipped with BMW’s M Sport that adds features like 18-inch alloy wheels and sports trim.

BMW 2 Series

The BMW 2 Series convertibles and coupes have added subtle changes, including all-LED lights. Even better, there are technological upgrades like the BMW iDrive 6 infotainment system and a Driver’s Assistance Package. If you’re “old school”, you’ll love the six-speed manual—but the eight-speed automatic is also great to drive. They’re propelled by a turbo 4-cylinder in the 220i and a tweaked, more powerful version of the same engine in the 230i.

In competition with the Audi S5, the range tops out with the M240i convertible and coupe, with snarling 3.0-L turbo 6-cylinder engines. Considerably more expensive, they include heated Dakota leather seats and a 12-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system.

The BMW X1 is a compact SUV that deserves its place in the BMW small cars prestige range. Its big brother, the BMW X2, is on the cusp of this category as well. The X1 is a proven performer, competing with the Volvo XC40 and the Mercedes Benz GLA.

The entry-level models are the sDrive 18i and 18d X Line with 1.5-L petrol and 2.0-L diesel engines respectively. Then there’s the sDrive 20i, a 2.0-L petrol unit. The range tops out with the xDrive 25i xLine, still a 2.0 L but with more power. All versions have M Sport variants. While the X1 is an SUV (crossover), only the top-of-the-line 25i models are AWD and all the others are front-wheel drive.

Through its small car range, BMW pioneered the “fan for life” concept—start small (and affordable) and move up through the 3 Series and 5 Series to be chauffeured around in a 7 Series limo. We think small cars stand tall and you’ll find the best small cars on the market on Gumtree Australia.
