Successful Gummies know that to sell your car on Gumtree, you need to get peoples’ attention. Most of us take great photos, provide clear descriptions and set a reasonable price for the car we’re selling on Gumtree. Some, however, get incredibly creative with their ads. Here’s an example of the Top 5 Outrageous Car Ads on Gumtree:
1990 Toyota Camry SV21 – good enough for James Bond
With some creative editing, the Melbourne owner of this well-loved Toyota exaggerated its “distinguished life”. He photo shopped his car alongside James Bond, behind the cast of the Fast & Furious, even into an iconic photo of the Beatles.
He refers to the $600 price tag as a “chance to own a piece of motoring history for less than the price of a large popcorn at the cinema.” This creative Gummie who no longer needs a car, goes on to say the car’s “performance is breathtaking. I mean it. You will take breaths as you experience this four-cylinder wonder fire into life, and rev through the four forward gears on your way to 110.”
Needless to say, his ad was viewed by over 3,000 people while it was up and he eventually sold his beloved Camry.
1992 Nissan Pulsar Hatchback – has its “perks”
A young Adelaide man was strongly urged by his wife to sell off his old hatchback. As he had recently upgraded his car, Chris posted what might be considered a harsh assessment of his almost 25 year old Nissan. But, he did feel that there would be some great benefits to buying his $800 “lawnmower on amphetamines”. While he has “no idea if this car will get you 500kms or 500,000kms before it dies,” Chris did feel that it would free up your finances for other things. As Chris states:
“You might be thinking, ‘if I spend 10K on a car then I know it will probably last me at least 6 or 7 years’. Well – that’s true my friend. You could buy a big 4WD with an inherent understanding that it will never see a dirt road and you just want it because it feels ‘safe’ and you can see over the traffic”. Chris continues to note that purchasing his very affordable car which runs perfectly fine, could save the new owner a lot of money “for a trip overseas, a Netflix subscription, Gym membership for 5 years (even though we both know you won’t go), or a room full of IKEA furniture that will cause your relationship to crumble as you assemble it.”
Despite his not-so-inviting descriptions, Chris eventually did sell his Nissan on Gumtree.
1991 Subaru Brumby – handcrafted by Zeus himself
WA’s Rich Wisken wanted to write an “interesting” ad about his beloved Subaru Brumby. He put his writing skills, which may have been helped along by consuming some Margaret River wine, to work on an ad of epic proportions. Viewed thousands of times, this Gumtree ad had people writing in from around the world. Wouldn’t you be interested in a car that is “fabricated from rare minerals excavated from the core of Mount Olympus, artfully designed by Zeus and skilfully handcrafted in the Land of the Rising Sun by the deft hands of the infamous Seven Samurai. This Japanese rice-rocket is unquestionably the most heroic form of transport since the Apollo 11 lunar module.”
The response to his ad was just as hilarious as the ad itself. Of the more than 1000 emails that Rich received, here are some of the most notable:
“As I read this out to my family, I laughed so hard that I actually lost control of my bladder – no joke.”
“You forgot to mention the suspension fabricated from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stem cells.”
While Rich hopes to build a career related to winemaking, he was even offered a job or two as a copywriter.
1984 Honda Accord – the Silver Bullet
This Gumtree ad had over 7,000 views in the first 2 days. Perhaps it was the promise that it would “finally make you a man (or a lady)”
“Premium crafted Japanese magic. Descended from generations of Samurai masters, came a beauty that stood the test of time. Undefeated and unmatched the ‘84 Accord moves forward into 2016 with 100% traditional technique – that’s right there are no computers, no fancy-pants buttons that make noises and tell you when your butt has reached optimum warmth. There are no bags of stale-air to explode on your face like a bad morning after in the western suburbs. – THIS – my friends, is the sword of knights, the chariot of kings, THE SILVER BULLET… There are windows all round to view the realms you will conquer. 4 wheels covered in a thin layer of rubber, perfect for sliding over icy terrain, but you may want to replace for climbing mountains or navigating through peak hour in the rain. The interior will destroy your inferiors, and could also do with a good shampoo for that fresh mountain pine smell. I could trade this for the emperor’s daughter, but I’m asking for your best offer.”
The sassy lady who put this ad up had a lot of support from other die-hard Honda fans and it’s safe to say that she successfully sold her beloved car on Gumtree.
2010 Toyota Landcruiser – will stop the earth’s rotation
One of our favourite car ads on Gumtree would have to be from Jon Gibson, a surf life saver from the Gold Coast who was parting with his beloved Landcruiser. His “man truck” with a bull bar “forged from samurai swords”, a super winch that can “stop the earth’s rotation” and a front facing snorkel that can “suck clouds right out of the sky” drew a great deal of attention. With all the interest shown his way, John could have driven up the price of his car, but this true blue Aussie sold his truck to the first person to make him an offer. He updated his ad once he sold the truck to urge people to support the lifesavers that patrol and protect our beaches.
